Chapter Fourteen

Seth

Emerald and I raced through the city, avoiding the crowds and passersby as much as we could. She was much more nimble than I was and raced ahead of me by yards, but I didn’t care. One of us getting to Mona first would be better than nothing. Better than losing her again.

Even if I wasn’t sure of what she had been talking about, I still cared about her. Losing her had been like losing family all over again. Without her around, I felt like I was half of what I could be. What I was meant to be.

And the thought of falling short of what I was meant to be frustrated and enraged me more than it felt like it should. Why was I so angry?

We arrived on the street where the forge was, and I caught a glimpse of Emerald hauling herself through the door so fast that it almost knocked her back out of the building. I made it within ten feet of the door when I heard a deafening, piercing scream.

I sprinted through the doorway, expecting a demon to be holding my friend hostage, but instead found the old smith laying on the floor with his chest split open and a dull, lifeless look on his face.

The blood wasn’t fresh, the carnage coagulating at our feet, but the act was done. Who had done it? Was it Mona?

I looked around for any clues and found nothing, minutes spent frantically turning the whole building upside down for even the most remote mention of a clue, and yet still came up empty-handed.

I roared, rage making my bones ache as unquenchable fury ate at my insides.

This man had been kind to me. Fair. All he had wanted to do was to pass on his art, and now he was dead, and we were no closer to finding Mona. She was slipping through my fingers, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I grabbed a hammer and threw it as hard as I could, the wall on the other side dinging in a way that was almost satisfying, so I looked around to find another hammer to lob. There, in the old man’s hand, was a hammer.

I had to pry it from his grip, and once I did, a small sheet of paper fell out. A cold chill washed over me, but my fingers couldn’t get there fast enough, Emerald having gotten to it first. She unfolded it and showed it to me.

It looked like a weapon with no handle.

Which would be perfect for someone who didn’t really need one—like Monami.

“She was here,” Emerald muttered, blinking around the room, as if seeing it truly for the first time. “We missed her.”

“Yeah, we did.” I motioned to the corpse. “And she must have done that, too.”

Emerald looked up at me, her face severe, “You don’t know that. It could have been the succubus, for all you know.”

“It could have been, but that weapon was made specifically for someone who uses Metal Aether to manipulate their weapons.
